Quinta Do Mel Guest House Albufeira

My recent trip to Albufeira, Portugal, for my birthday ended up being a rather disappointing experience, particularly during dinner at a restaurant that I've frequented in the past. I’ve always enjoyed visiting for morning coffees and purchasing their exquisite orange jam. This restaurant had earned our trust, so making a reservation for 7:30 in advance was expected to ensure a smooth birthday celebration. However, upon arrival, my party and I felt completely ignored, standing at the doorway for ten minutes before finally being acknowledged. Instead of a warm welcome, we were awkwardly directed to a table at the far end of the outdoor area without any explanation or care for our comfort.

Once seated, we waited another ten minutes before receiving a menu, and not once were we offered drinks. The waitstaff seemed overwhelmed, as it took an additional twenty minutes before they returned to take our order, and I found myself pressured into ordering a bottle of Malbec due to their insistence. The atmosphere felt more like a scene from a ‘Faulty Towers’ episode, and I couldn't help but feel let down by what once was a cherished dining experience. We were hopeful as we placed our orders, but the service continued to lag significantly.

The food finally arrived after an extensive wait of thirty minutes. While I understand that meals are cooked to order, I was disheartened to find one of my dishes—the mushroom risotto—was regrettably mushy, likely having been placed on a hot plate for far too long. Although the portion sizes were generous, the overall quality and service did not live up to the expectations, especially considering the hefty bill of over £100. After this experience, I’m left contemplating whether it was a one-off incident or simply a decline in standards. Despite my fondness for coffee at Quinta do Mel, I doubt I would return for dinner, as there are plenty of other favored restaurants in the area that promise a better experience.
